Build a strong and loving relationship with yourself so that you can rest without guilt or shame.

At 20 years old being diagnosed with insomnia didn't really bother me. I knew for a long time before then that I didn't sleep as well as others. I only went to the Doctor about because I wanted medication - thankfully he didn't give me any.

I tried all sorts of natural things, routines that I didn't stick to and even therapy for a short time.

I ended up having such bad insomnia that I would sleep around 4 hours a week. It was at this time I was also diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. I thought there was nothing that could change it and I was used to it.

It wasn't just that I couldn't sleep at night, I was overworking, burning out and not resting in the day when I needed it. There was so much guilt and shame surrounding needing rest admitting it made me feel less than, worthless and it was another part of my illness that I wanted to deny.

I would watch TV and scroll through social media as a form of rest, I would drink energy drinks and lots of coffee to stay alert at work and I would be so drained, physically mentally and emotionally.

All that changed when I healed my relationship with rest - it became an essential part of my day, keeps me alert and focused when I need to be and I am no longer fatigued!
